We, Het Markttheater, are a company that revitalizes theater in the marketplace. And playing the world with our sense of the street. Our company consists of the artistic core, formed by Sean Hauser and Justin van der Veen, business director Emma Hilde Fuchs, community creator Mystha Mandersloot, surrounded by an ensemble of creators, actors, musicians and other types of artists with whom we collaborate on a regular basis. We see ourselves as a contemporary popular theater company, which wants to give marginalized groups a voice and face, and critically examine the ruling class and attitudes. From journalistic research, improvisation and broad artistic research into popular theater, we develop assembly performances full of comedy, interaction, music and new scenarios that appeal to a broad, inexperienced and diverse audience. In this, we do not stay in our own bubble, but seek connections with social partners, residents, experts and officials, to feed the artistic process and realize social impact.
The market is the place where we encounter all layers of society, and thus the appropriate place to develop an innovative and relevant popular theater. We believe it is necessary to make a movement towards the audience. Our performances therefore take place in the middle of the market square, with striking sets and open audience arrangements, and are also free to enter. In this way, we reach a diverse audience, including many people who would otherwise never go to the theater. And when an audience is an actual representation of society, as far as we are concerned, it has not only social but also artistic value. Since 2021, the Dappermarkt has been our home. It is the place from which we make theater, where we have offices and where we recently even managed an anti-squat space. In addition, we can regularly be found at the Sunday Market and the Binnenrotte Markt. All three distinctive markets that we enjoy playing.
